            Before the party starts, we’re getting the house ready. From

           Citywide Cleanup

            . It’s more than just picking up litter; it’s a community-wide "flex." You’ll also notice the Tallassee Redevelopment Authority (TRA) adding fresh pops of color with new planters and flowers downtown, and those new picnic tables at the library—perfect for a spring lunch break. This all coming after the

He visited several sites around Tallassee including the Armory and Mill site. Mayor Joey Wiginton aims to take advantage of grant opportunities starting with converting the nearby railroad bridge into a pedestrian walking bridge. In February, the city council moved to apply for a Rebuilding Alabama Act(RAA) Grant with intentions of renovating the bridge. On March 9, city officials allocated funds to the TRA to complete an engineering study of the bridge so as to move forward with construction.

           Last night, I had the distinct honor of participating in honoring one of Tallassee’s finest civil servants, reviewing the future of Tallassee residencies and announcing an opportunity for Tallassee residents to make their voice heard. First, I will address the opportunity we had to honor former Municipal Judge, Linda Benson, with general information about our council meeting to follow.
          &#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Honoring 37 Years of Service

           Linda Benson was presented a plaque honoring her more than 30 years of service as a municipal Judge for Tallassee. Upon accepting this honor, she narrated her journey with its ups and downs to the present day.

           In 1980, she became a lawyer and soon after considered being appointed with the municipality of Carrville. However, an individual commented that Mrs. Benson was actively suing Carrville, effectively dissuading the municipal council from selecting her. “That wasn’t true,” she continued, “but, I wasn’t there to spread the truth.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Judge Benson’s father was not going to stand for it. She states that her father “wore out 3 pairs of shoes going door to door,” starting a petition to merge Carrville into Tallassee. Beyond the time and energy committed to this endeavor, other obstacles emerged. Judge Benson’s mother received an anonymous phone call threatening her safety if she did not intervene in the petition process. Later an anonymous individual sent a strongly worded letter saying that Linda Benson would never be municipal judge in Tallassee. Despite the opposition, Tallassee and Carrville merged.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           In 1984 Linda Benson was hired as Tallassee’s Public Defender and on October 3rd, 1988, Linda Benson was appointed as Municipal Judge for the city of Tallassee. Even after being appointed as judge, she was met with scrutiny when a council member criticized her for not moving through cases more efficiently. Judge Benson notes that just prior to this experience, she was stopped in a public book store by the parent of one involved in a DUI case. The parent praised Judge Benson for taking the time during his case to help them understand the implications. The individual started making better decisions because of it. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Judge Benson emphasized the importance of focusing on the people in her cases saying
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “You can’t just brush people aside like cattle through the chute.” She went on to say that when an individual arrived late for court because he walked, they stayed. They heard his case. And Lane Knight, a lawyer with the city, drove him back to his home in Tuskegee afterwards. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Judge Benson concludes by praising court staff for their resolution in the face of unruly cases, naming Corrin and Glenda among others. She additionally commended lawyers John Smith and Lane Knight for their excellent work and respect for the local Police Department as they risk their lives to uphold the law.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Council Business
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The first item on the agenda was introducing a floodplain ordinance. As I understand it, the ordinance makes us compliant with FEMA standards such that citizens in floodplains can still participate in the National Flood Insurance Program(NFIP). This allows citizens to get flood insurance. Now, the document is very lengthy, totalling over 40 pages and we will be voting on it in the next session on February 23rd. This will give me more time to better grasp the ordinance’s content.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Next, we amended ordinance 2020-565 relating to how a mobile home may be installed in the city limits. This change prohibits the installation of new manufactured/mobile homes in the city limits. Current homeowners living in mobile homes are not impacted since they are grandfathered in. The council voted unanimously to accept the proposal. I personally voted to accept this because it protects Tallassee’s current and future citizens by deciding now to keep neighborhoods vibrant via high-quality housing standards.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Chamber of Commerce Director, Carmen Rodgers, presented a proposal proclaiming the 100th anniversary of Martin Dam. It was noted that a summer celebration would likely be in the city’s plans. The council unanimously accepted this proclamation.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Additionally, a resolution to pursue the Rebuild Alabama Act grant. The resolution authorizes the Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission (CARPDC) to prepare the application and the mayor to sign and prepare documents as necessary. This grant would seek to help in the restoration of the old railroad bridge below the Benjamin Fitzpatrick bridge. Bringing function back to such an iconic part of Tallassee’s history would be a great victory for connecting East and West Tallassee.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Looking Forward to the next meeting
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Wiginton suggested changing regular council meetings to Tuesdays. This would allow council members to attend other critical Monday night meetings such as the Industrial Development Board and Chamber of Commerce. He also announced the City of Tallassee will be hosting a Public Town Hall, inviting all interested parties to come with concerns and ideas as it relates to Tallassee’s future.
          &#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Over the last month, I have shared my experiences with the Tallassee Historical Preservation Society. We covered the artifacts in the museum and the historic structures that line our river.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Being part of the THPS has been a rewarding experience. I have been able to connect with more people in town, learn more about this city’s history, and take a more active role in protecting the past. They keep me busy, but I have loved every minute of it.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The Friends of Tuckabatchee
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Alan Parker, current President, shared a note not long after I joined saying:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “In 2010 several members of THPS talked about forming Friends of Tuckabatchee (FoT) to pay tribute to Tallassee’s American Native Americans in plays and/or events. The first play was in 2011. FoT had several mutual connections to Indians in Oklahoma and encouraged FoT to include them in our play and other events of that week. The group of Muskogee, Ok, Indians came and assisted FoT with the first play. Mayor McCain presented the group from Oklahoma, with a key to the city. In turn the citizens of Tallassee were presented with an Indian blanket. The blanket has been framed and now hangs in Tallassee City Hall.“
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;

           The Tallassee High School Alumni Association is pleased to announce its 2026 class for the Hall of Pride.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           The inductees are:

           The late Dr. James Riley Boddie, Class of 1968

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Dr. Denise Taunton Reid, Class of 1986
          &#xD;

           The late Dr. Jimmy Durden, Service Award

           Riley Boddie graduated from Auburn University, earned a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and earned a Ph.D. from Auburn University.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Denise Reid graduated from Troy University and earned a master’s and a Ph.D. From Auburn University.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Dr. Jimmy Durden, a native of Opp, Alabama, graduated from the University of Alabama and attended medical school at the University of South Alabama. He opened his practice in Tallassee in 1981 and served the people of Tallassee for 28 years. He was the team physician at THS for those 28 years, volunteering his time and expertise to the students.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Hall of Pride induction ceremony will be on Sunday, April 12 in the THS auditorium. The public is invited to come and hear more about the accomplishments of our outstanding inductees.
          &#xD;

           The Society does work outside the museum too. Their mission is written into the landmarks that define Tallassee’s landscape.
          &#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Tallassee Confederate Armory
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;a href="https://www.fortwiki.com/Tallassee_Confederate_Armory" target="_blank"&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Confederate Armory
          &#xD;
    &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            is perhaps one of the most impressive examples of Tallassee’s history. Often referenced as the second-oldest standing building in Alabama, it is the only Confederate Armory to escape destruction by Union forces during the Civil War.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Originally a Cotton Mill, the site was transformed when Colonel Gorgas had the Richmond Arsenal relocated here to preserve carbine production. It sits just south of the Benjamin Fitzpatrick River Bridge. It is a special focal point for the Society because they have a long-term goal to move the museum into this historic structure. Currently, restoration efforts are underway on the bell tower, with plans to install the bell soon.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Patterson Log Cabin
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Going back further in time, the Patterson Log Cabin was built in 1845 and remains the oldest dwelling in Tallassee. It was built by the ancestors of Bill Patterson, a current local resident. Before formal schools were established, this cabin served as a center for learning in the community. It stands today at 501 Sims Ave and is available to be rented for events. It gives you a chance to host a gathering inside a piece of history.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Mill
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The THPS purchased this property several years ago, securing a vital piece of our downtown heritage. This purchase was a real community effort. With the help of the local radio station, WACQ, the Society produced a downtown music concert for 18 years to pay off the mortgage.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           It just goes to show that when Tallassee comes together, we can save anything.

            The classic fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” is coming to the Tallassee High School Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Missoula Children’s Theatre production brings local school-aged children center stage after just one week of rehearsals.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Missoula has been around since 1970 and has put on productions for over 1,100 communities around the world. Their connection to Tallassee and the McCraney-Arts Council (MCAC) dates back to 1998 and has become an annual tradition.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “It’s not a small feat at all,” said new MCAC director Michaela Bird. “They have 54 kids ranging from five to 18 years old. To consolidate all of those young minds and get a product by the end of the week is very impressive.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Bird is taking the reins as director from Jerry Cunningham, who has seen many Missoula performances over the years.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “My wife (Donna) talked to the (Missoula) director,” Cunningham said. “(Having) 50 plus is larger than normal. It’s encouraging.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Cunningham spoke about his transition from the MCAC director’s seat, a role he has held since 2018.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “We’ve asked Michaela to head it up. We’re glad she’s willing. I’ve seen what she’s done so far. She’s taken a lot of initiative. She has a lot of energy and motivation.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Cunningham recently retired from the Tallassee Chamber of Commerce after eight years as director.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “It’s such an honor being passed the torch by the Jerry Cunningham,” Bird said. “He is the genesis of so many arts programs. To be able to carry on that legacy, I’m very honored. The mission is to nurture and further the arts in Tallassee.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The McCraney-Cottle Arts Council dates back to 1963.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “Alvin McCraney started it,” Cunningham added. “He taught glee club at the high school. John Cottle was an organist at the Methodist church. He was big in it. The way it was then is different now. That’s why I think it’s good to have new leadership.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tickets will be available at the door and are $15 each and $5 for students ages 5-15. Children under five will be admitted for free.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           For a lot of us, history isn't just about dates and battles. It is about names, families, and the people who came before us.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Tallassee Falls Museum is a great resource for people looking to learn about their personal lineage. Whether you are researching Tallassee history, Alabama history, or even looking for resources relating to North and South Carolina history, this is the place to start.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Right now, they have significant records about the Fincher and Sistrunk Family histories. Susan Dragone, the organization historian and museum curator, is working hard with the community to expand this collection. There are also records that detail family histories local to Elmore, Tallapoosa, and Coosa counties. These include biographies, place descriptions, and items that would be of great interest to anyone building a family tree.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           A Personal Touch
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The value of a local historian is hard to overstate. In one experience, Mrs. Dragone noted:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;blockquote&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “I recently had some women from the Birmingham area contact me about their McKinley family. I was able to find some things and they came down to get them. We enjoyed a tour of some of the places in town where their family lived and went to church, as well as a visit to the Rose Hill Cemetery. I was able to give them some information about their family that they did not know.“
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/blockquote&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           To me, that is the type of experience you can only get in Tallassee. You cannot get a personal tour of your great-grandfather's church from a website.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            Are you looking for your Tallassee ancestors? The THPS might hold the key. Visit the museum and see what stories are waiting for you.

           I walked into the Tallassee Falls Museum for the Society's regularly scheduled 3rd Monday meeting and was immediately impressed. Tallassee boasts a modest population of about 5,000. Usually, you expect a museum in a city our size to be quite limited.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What I saw was a treasure chest on Barnett Boulevard.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The museum is set up with booths detailing different periods, events, and topics. It shows a clear timeline of our region. I noticed quite a complete collection regarding our Native American Heritage. The display touches heavily on the “Tuchabatchee – Creek Nation” and provides context about historical leaders. Many of them lived right here in Tallassee. It brings history to life to see actual artifacts found in local fields. It reminds us that we walk on historic ground every day.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The Industrial Spirit
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           No history of Tallassee would be complete without the Industrial History. The museum details the Mills with blueprints and an 1890s wooden cotton carding machine. For those interested in how our local economy grew, the collection includes pieces showing name changes over the years, old products, blueprints of the old mill,  pictures, and even a miniature weaving loom. Historical businesses are preserved here with antique bottles and equipment on display.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

            Echoes of Conflict
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tallassee has also been touched by global conflicts. Displays pay homage to those from our area who served in the World Wars. They feature uniforms, helmets, and weapons. Naturally, with the Confederate Armory so close, many items relating to its presence and role in the Civil War are also available for viewing. It offers an objective look at the artifacts of that era.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The Literary Corner
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           I also noticed the gift shop. It is filled with books from local authors, proving that Tallassee is a town of storytellers. Authors include:

            My journey with the Talisi Historical Preservation Society (THPS) began unexpectedly earlier this year. Like many great connections in a smaller city, it started with a conversation. While doing research for a college assignment, my paths crossed with Joey Wiginton, the Vice President of the THPS.
            &#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
        
            In our casual conversation, I voiced the interest I had in my hometown of Eclectic. I had been learning about their history and felt a strong pull to help preserve it. Joey’s reaction was immediate and welcoming: he invited me to look a little closer to home, here in Tallassee, and get to know the Talisi Historical Preservation Society.
            &#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
        
            I accepted the invitation, though I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. When I walked through the doors of the
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100067294264681" target="_blank"&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tallassee Falls Museum
          &#xD;
    &lt;/a&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            I was pleasantly surprised. I found a live an thriving organization full of passionate citizens and knowledgeable stewards of history. Not only did I find historians well acquainted with the past, but active participants in the future of Tallassee and Alabama history. These were not merely caretakers of dusty artifacts; they were working actively to improve current historical sites and encourage knowledge and engagement in the community.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The energy was contagious. Not long after that first meeting, I joined as a member of the organization.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The work they do aligns perfectly with the spirit of redevelopment we see growing in our city. Tallassee has a rich history that is still with us. Preserving the past and telling its stories are an indispensable part of our future. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing a series of posts detailing the incredible resources I have uncovered since that night. From the Native American heritage that named our river to the industrial might that built our skyline, there is so much to explore.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Tallassee City Schools receives "A" on state report card
          &#xD;

           The Alabama Department of Education has put out its annual report card scores. Tallassee received an 84 overall, unchanged from the previous year. Tallassee Elementary School got the system's first-ever A with a state score of 90.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "System-wide, we're a solid B which we've been for a couple of years," TCS superintendent Dr. Brock Nolin stated. "I'm really excited we have our first A school. I cannot say enough about the teachers and the staff." 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Shanikka Beacher is in her ninth year as TES principal.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "Every student matters, and every moment counts," Beacher said. "Together, we’re forging something truly special."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Southside Middle School scored an 84 overall, down slightly from an 85 the previous year. Tallassee High School had a 77, its third straight year with an improved score.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Nolin spoke about the marked improvement over the years at TES. Last year's number was an 88. It was an 81 the preceding year.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "They've steadily increased that score incrementally. These scores are a year in the rear, so basically the scores were tests taken in the spring. I wish it were more timely, then we could tweak our instruction.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "We're excited but have some work to do. We're not saying B is where we want to be. We want to be an A school across the board."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tallassee showed an academic growth rate of 94.99 percent and graduation rate of 87.7 percent. Chronic absenteeism was 8.57 percent. College and career readiness was 71.31 percent.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Demographics for the system were 65.72 percent white and 26.81 black or African American. The 12th grade class had the highest percentage of students at 9.53 percent compared to the second grade with the lowest of 6.97 percent.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Nolin added that the school system has received full accreditation status for another five years as well.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "I want to congratulate all of our staff and students. Beth Haynes led that charge. It takes a couple of years to get prepared for that process."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Walking trails along the river, new hotels, new businesses and more are part of what new Tallassee Mayor Joey Wiginton is hoping for in the future of Tallassee.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The new mayor sees a hotel on the west banks of the Tallapoosa River in the west mill site using the old rock structure as its exterior.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “To me, that would be a beautiful sign for a hotel,” Wiginton said. “Drury does a hotel inside an old building in New Orleans. People like to stay in historic structures. There are builders who like to build inside of them. I don’t want to demolish the west side mill.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Wiginton himself is a partner in the reopening of the Mt. Vernon Performing Arts Center. He is also involved in bringing The Guest House back to life in Tallassee.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “We are working on a bread and breakfast there,” Wiginton said.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           But to bring in outside investors for the larger projects, Wiginton understands they have to recruit small businesses to create an environment to give travelers a reason to stop by.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “We already have access to three lakes,” Wiginton said. “Especially with Lake Martin we have people traveling through here. We just need a way to stop them before they get there.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Wiginton wants to rename Lake Thurlow to Lake Tallassee since a significant portion of it is in the City of Tallassee.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “With the three lakes, Martin, Middle Pond and Thurlow, we can create a fishing tournament like no other,” Wiginton said. “We can have the first round on Martin and have the semifinalist advance to Middle Pond and the Top 10 to Thurlow. No where else has this kind of opportunity.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The trails along the river create an opportunity for scenic vistas. Wiginton wants to see a lighted walkway between the two boat ramps below the Fitzpatrick Bridge.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “I want benches for people to sit and watch the water flow by,” Wiginton said. “Can you imagine what it would look like with the moon we had the other night. I can see a wedding on the old railroad bridge.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Wiginton wants to work with Alabama Power to lower the lake level of Lake Thurlow.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “It would allow us to add sand near the boat ramp and create a swimming area,” Wiginton said. “It would give the public a place to go on the lake and swim similar to Wind Creek State Park. It would also give us a chance to clean out some of the silt back in the slough at the Clairewood subdivision.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The new mayor is also looking at existing assets in and around Tallassee. Another idea in the works would put a larger police presence on the campus of Community Hospital.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “We are looking at extra space they have there and moving the police department,” Wiginton said. “They have a building with two floors where the bottom floor is pretty much empty. They have some things stored there. With its offices, I think it is an ideal space and would get the police department out of a bad building.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Wiginton said the city needs to do a better job of working with Monster Mountain. He said this past weekend more than 3,000 people from across the Southeast were there for competition.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “They have people who basically live in RVs there,” Wiginton said. “They homeschool and then the children train on the track. We should be better connected and inform our businesses about what is going on there. Walmart sure notices when it's a big weekend at Monster Mountain.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Wiginton said he is an idea person. He likes to think of things that might work and share them to see what everyone can do or make it better.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “We're going to start making some stuff happen,” Wiginton said. “I'm excited about it. I know some of it's little mini stuff, but some of us can add to it. I may not have the answer for everything but I’m not afraid to ask until I find it.”
          &#xD;

           Things are looking a little fresher in downtown Tallassee thanks to grants being awarded by the Tallassee Redevelopment Authority.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Tallassee Redevelopment Authority facade grant aided in the purchase of picnic tables and umbrellas in front of Tallassee Nutrition and Meme Sue Bakery. The grant is aimed at improving appearances in downtown Tallassee to attract people downtown.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           So far the TRA has issued three grants. One went to The Mill Collective to aid installing new signage. The other two have gone to Tallassee Nutrition and Meme Sue’s Bakery and Creamery for picnic tables and umbrellas.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
